Shelter Systems Limited
Industry Affiliations
Shelter
Systems was started by the Hikel family—Dwight, Linda and
Joe—and a partner in 1976. Starting small, the original plant
had a little over 14,000 square feet of production space,
five employees, a saw and three truss assembly stations. In
the early 1980s, the Hikels added an additional 18,000 square
feet to the manufacturing facility. By 2003, Shelter Systems
was growing, and it was evident that our existing plant could
no longer handle the work orders coming in. It was clear that
a new facility was needed.
On
January 31, 2005, Shelter Systems commenced operations at
our new state-of-the-art facility in Westminster, MD. This
new plant has 120,000 square feet of manufacturing operations,
another 11,000 square feet of office space, eight acres of
storage, engineered wood product (EWP), and transportation-related
yard, and another 13 acres for future expansion.
Our
new state-of-the-art facility can process 8 truckloads of wood daily,
which is more than 165,000 board feet. Each truckload is stored inside
our air-exchanged, climate-controlled storage facility, not stacked
outside. Protection from the elements means that we produce more stable,
higher-quality floor and roof trusses. In addition, we can process up
to 12 truckloads of engineered lumber per week and employ up to 210 trained
professionals to get the job done. This translates into a reduction in
cycle-times, which means that every job will be completed to offer you
a quality product in a timely fashion.
The
combination of lean manufacturing processes and a loyal and
caring workforce enables us to quickly fill the varied needs
of today's builder with top quality structural components.
From your initial meeting with us, to the delivery of your
product, you can count on each member of the Shelter Systems
Limited team to be responsive to your needs, offer swift and
reliable solutions, and assist with continuing customer service
even after the job is done!

RE: Woodland Park Apartments
Dear Joe:
I wanted to let you know that I truly appreciate the efforts made
by Dave Weiss and Tony Acampa during the design and framing of this
important project. Everything has gone smoothly despite the degree
of difficulty and the tight site conditions. They have worked well
with Ace Carpentry and my field staff, worked with John Metzler
to get the shop drawings approved, quickly resolved repair details,
adjusted to the delivery logistics and kept up with our schedule.
Efforts like this are definitely noticed and remind me why I awarded
this project to your company in the first place. Please let these
guys know how I feel.
Sincerely,
Jefferson G. Grant
